Dealing with Violence in the Community

1. Particularly in the larger urban areas of the country violence is at an unacceptable level. In the very largest of our cities, where the violence is the highest there are community-oriented policing programs. Obviously these cities are seeing high incidents of murder and assault but that does not mean that the community-oriented policing efforts in those cities aren’t having some positive impact. Go to this website and browse through states and cities: http://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2015/crime-in-the-u.s.-2015/tables/table-8/table_8_offenses_known_to_law_enforcement_by_state_by_city_2015.xls/view Find a city that has a high rate of violence (you may be able to guess where to look) and then research that city to see what their community-oriented policing effort is like. Analyze the how the implementation of that program has worked, critically review their strategies and suggest actions they could take that might improve the efficiency of the program.

   Write a 2 page APA style paper.  Only the body of the paper will count toward the word requirement (title page and references are in addition to the 2 pages)

   In your paper, cite at least 2-3 references using the APA style guide format for in-text citation.

2. Define larceny and embezzlement. Are both of these crimes considered theft? Why or why not? What are the differences between larceny and embezzlement? Why are the differences important?

   Your essay response must be a minimum of 200 words.

3. What is computer crime? What are examples of this type of crime? Provide a short description of one of the early cases of computer crime. Explain at least two federal statutes which are relevant to crimes committed with or against computer equipment. Describe the four elements of computer tampering.

   Your essay response must be a minimum of 500 words.

4. Unit II Article Review

   For this assignment, read parts I and II of the assigned article by Macdonald, “Constructing a Framework for Criminal

   Justice Research: Learning from Packer’s Mistakes,” and write an article review addressing the following:

   Briefly introduce and summarize the article.

   Identify the author’s main points.

   Who is the author’s intended audience?

   Compare and contrast the crime control and due process models.

   Your response must be at least three pages in length. All sources used, including the article, must be referenced.

   Paraphrased and/or quoted materials must have accompanying in-text citations and references in APA form.
