CONCERT REVIEW FORM
As you watch the performance, take good notes, and be prepared to write about the following topics:
1. What’s going on musically? What kinds of instruments are there? How many? Describe the musical ensemble. Describe the audience. Describe the venue. Be as descriptive as possible! ? Increasing the music sound loudly, Guitars, 4 drums, piano set, saxophones and upright bass. Audience clapping, nodding head, tapping their legs.
2. What is/are the name(s) of the piece(s) being performed? Who is the composer? In which musical style period was the music written? They played Rodney Swan’s Where or When. Composer Jason Marsalis, Jordan. Band name (Marcus Roberts Trio)
3. What does the music sound like? Be as descriptive as possible, and be sure to consult the musical elements (sound, pitch, dynamics, tone color, voices, instruments, rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, form, improvisation, etc…) ?
4. IMPORTANT. Did you LIKE the music or not? Why or why not? Is this the type of concert that you would go to on your own, if you weren’t required to? You do NOT need to say that you liked it if you didn’t! You will not be graded on whether or not you liked it. However, it is important to have an opinion, one way or the other. ?
Layout of paper:
I. Heading
At the top of your paper include your name, class and date. This should be single-spaced. Include a title if you’d like, and start your report. DO NOT include a bunch of white space between the heading/title and beginning of your report.
II. Introduction (1 paragraph)
This paragraph should include the following information: what was the event, where was the concert held, when was this performance, who performed, and what kind of music was performed?
III. Body (as many paragraphs as needed)
In this section give a description of your initial impressions of the performance: did the venue add to the performance, how did the audience respond, was the atmosphere casual or formal, etc. If this is an in-class concert report, still try to give an impression of the overall atmosphere surrounding the performance.
The rest of the body should include an analysis of the performance. If possible, address each of the elements of music in your evaluation (sound, instrumentation, rhythm, form, texture, melody, harmony, style).
IV. Conclusion (1 paragraph)
Give a summary of your overall impression of the performance. Did you enjoy the concert? Did your opinion of the music change at all during the performance? Would you see this band/symphony/etc. again? Be honest!
**IMPORTANT**?Your concert reports should be about 750 words (no less than 700/no more than 800). You will find it difficult to answer the questions thoroughly in less than 750 words (roughly three pages). Concert reviews must be uploaded to mygateway by 11.59 pm on the date they are due (be sure to check the course calendar for due dates!). Late work will not be accepted. No exceptions.
The reports should be typed, double-spaced, and use 12-point Times New Roman font or Arial with 10-point font.

Extra Credit
You are allowed to complete one extra concert review to be considered for 50 points extra credit. The extra credit review will be graded with the same criteria as the others and is due by midnight on the day of the final. Late reviews will not be considered for credit.
