INSTRUCTIONS
1. Write a reflection paper on marriage as presented by Balswick in Chapter 4, up to the
section on “Differentiated Unity: Becoming One While Maintaining Uniqueness.”
2. Reflection papers should be from 300 to 500 words and must show a level of critical
analysis that reflects your understanding of the reading as well as your own personal
response.
3. Compose the paper in a Word document.

Carefully following the instructions for this assignment, write a reflection/summary
paper that demonstrates:
1. An understanding of the assigned reading.
2. A capacity for critical analysis.
3. An ability to apply the material in a practical manner.
Unlike a research paper, a reflection/summary does not require footnotes or references because it is a specifically assigned reading. Your own words are preferable to quotes in that the focus is upon your understanding and application of the information that has been presented.
Your paper should:
1. Be 300 to 500 words in length.
2. Be submitted in a Word document with one-inch margins and double-spaced.
3. Be written according to APA Writing Style Guidelines: See Writing Style Guides under Course Introduction.
It will be evaluated according to the following guide:
Intent – Does it demonstrate an understanding of the assignment?
Application – Must show a level of critical analysis that demonstrates the student’s ability to apply the material in a practical manner.

Academic Propriety – Are correct spelling, proper grammar and well-formed sentences apparent?

UNIT SIX INTRODUCTION
The Unit 6 Handout introduces the student to the importance of the biblical concept of “leaving” the family of origin in order to be able to begin another unique family that is “named after God.”
What God Has Joined Together expands on the concept of leaving and introduces the important issue of differentiation in both the family of origin and the family of newly-weds. Men Are Like Waffles; Women Are Like Spaghetti incorporates the principles of differentiation in the lives of parents through the analogies of “Belgian basics” and “Pasta principles.” The Family lays a strong foundation for biblical principles involved in stabling a strong marriage.
UNIT SIX OUTCOMES
1. Comprehend the importance of the principle of leaving: Biblical marriage covenant is based on the leaving of the father and the mother—from the words, “shall a man leave father and mother.”
2. Complete a critical/reflective writing on, Balswick chapter 4 until the section of
“Differentiated Unity: Becoming One While Maintaining Uniqueness.” Reasonably discuss the following statements: “The significance of the concept of ‘leaving’ has been
greatly underestimated today—even by many well-intentioned Christians,” and Parents
need to instill the importance of this concept in children when they are young;” and
discuss how these statements can be applied to marriage and family counseling today.

3. Reasonably discuss the following statements: “Parenting is a team sport. When you put your efforts together and invest your uniqueness into your child, he or she can run to
win,” and discuss how these statements can be applied to marriage and family counseling today.
